CGSA-AEDC Student Research Roundtable!

The CGSA-AEDC is holding its second research round-table. Last year around this time we invited communication grad students to get together and talk about the research they are currently involved in. We thought people needed a way to hear what their colleagues are up to, what challenges they are facing and questions they have, all while drinking lots of delicious free coffee. It was a great success. Which is why we are bringing …it back this year.
On Wednesday March 16th, 2011 in Desmarais (room 11143) from 9:00 to 11:00am, you are invited to come and join our research gab fest. Please note that this is not solely for students doing the research paper/thesis option. If you are in course based, and doing a research paper for a class, we urge you to join in!

We hope to see you all there!

Sincerely,
Your CGSA-AEDC

The Story of our Identity

The Logo

A school of fish

Inspired by the opening remarks by our President at the beginning of Intercom, the new logo illustrates a vital aspect of the organization. It is about making a “school”, a community of thinkers who question, probe, explore the depths of their chosen fields. At the same time, the idea of “school” is also about supporting, mentoring, teaching, and learning from one another.

New CGSA Executive Committee

The CGSA is proud to announce a new executive committee.

David Gick, President

David Gick is a second year Master’s candidate who has been an active member of the department’s student body. As chair of the Intercom student conference series, David has helped create a space for students from across the department to share ideas, and look for support and advice from colleagues. He is committed to advocating on behalf of students and keeping them informed about developments in the department and broader Graduate community which have an impact on Communication Graduate Students. To this end, he has been attending departmental assemblies and helped to organize today’s wine and cheese to give students and faculty a chance to meet each other in a less ‘formal’ environment.

Sarah Wenglensky-Suggitt, Vice-President

Sarah Wenglensky-Suggitt is in her second year as an MA candidate. Prior to undertaking her current studies Sarah graduated with an Honours BA in Communication, minor in Business Administration from the University of Ottawa, with research interests in organizational behaviour and entrepreneurship. Sarah has focused her efforts on becoming involved in student run initiatives within the program and local community. Sarah is a member of the organizing committee for Intercom, a student run interdisciplinary speaker series, and worked closely with the CGSA during her first year in the program to help carry out social initiatives. If elected Executive VP Sarah will focus on fostering an open, productive relationship between the CGSA and student body.

Youna Zhang, Vice-President of Finance

Youna Zhang is in her second year of Master’s studies. She holds an Honours B.A. from the University of Toronto, specializing in International Relations and minoring in Spanish. Youna currently works for Intergovernmental Affairs at the Privy Council Office, where she manages, among other things, the financial budget of the division. She is known in her division as an independent and diligent employee, who ensures the highest level of security and requires minimal supervision. After completing her current degree Youna hopes to complete a second Masters in Globalization and International Development.

Steve Jankowski, Vice-President of External Affairs

Steve Jankowski is currently in his second year of his Masters of Arts in Communication. Prior to studying for his Masters, he received his Bachelor of Design from York University & Sheridan College. From 2005 to the present day he has continued to work as a graphic designer. Due to his professional career, he has first-hand experience with creating marketing campaigns, corporate branding, and event design. Beyond this experience, he has worked closely with the CGSA and the organizers of INTERCOM to produce strategies and design materials to attract, accommodate, and interest the student body.
