The CGSA-AEDC is holding its second research round-table. Last year around this time we invited communication grad students to get together and talk about the research they are currently involved in. We thought people needed a way to hear what their colleagues are up to, what challenges they are facing and questions they have, all while drinking lots of delicious free coffee. It was a great success. Which is why we are bringing …it back this year.
On Wednesday March 16th, 2011 in Desmarais (room 11143) from 9:00 to 11:00am, you are invited to come and join our research gab fest. Please note that this is not solely for students doing the research paper/thesis option. If you are in course based, and doing a research paper for a class, we urge you to join in!
We hope to see you all there!
Sincerely,
Your CGSA-AEDC

APA, Chicago, MLA. These are formal systems that alleviate the burden of format, style, and grammar decisions for academics. Surprisingly, with the increase of presentations being a requirement of both student and professional life, there is no such system when it comes to visual communication. The results of this are in every classroom, every seminar, and at every conference: Fonts that are too small to be read at a distance, colour combinations that strain the eyes, powerpoint slides that make unfortunate “whooshing” noises.
Graphic designer and academic, Steve Jankowski, is holding a seminar on February 2nd, 2011 @ 1:30pm, in the Arts Hall, room 509, to teach design principles to students and professors. He will address the principles of legibility, readability, and the behavioural effects that colour, text, and image have on audiences.
As part of educating academics in the realm of design, the CGSA will be selling an amazing little book, The Cognitive Style of Powerpoint, by Edward Tufte, an artist, professor, author, and information designer. It will be sold for $10 and all sales will go to the CGSA.
Steve Jankowski received his Bachelor of Design from York University and Sheridan College in 2005. He has worked for six years in the field creating books, websites, signage, and brands for such clients as Canada Excellence Research Chairs, SSHRC, Billings Bridge Shopping Mall, and Camp Fortune.
