The Logo
A school of fish
Inspired by the opening remarks by our President at the beginning of Intercom, the new logo illustrates a vital aspect of the organization. It is about making a “school”, a community of thinkers who question, probe, explore the depths of their chosen fields. At the same time, the idea of “school” is also about supporting, mentoring, teaching, and learning from one another. With this in mind, the image of a school of fish captures this image well. While each fish is a disparate individual, travelling in its own direction, swimming with its own velocity, a fascinating thing happens. Individuals of the school form a kind of cohesion and a distinctive mass. We are that school of fish, travelling alongside each other, whether our ponds be big or small.
The Website
The direction of the new website is nothing spectacular. However, what it does offer is a freshness and lightness that is implied by the logo. We hope that the new colour scheme and the attention to readers’ needs will help make this site a more enjoyable experience.
The History of the CGSA Identity
Being graduate students of Communication, we understand that there are many mediums that messages come by. In 2009, the Executive Council at the time decided that it was time to re-evaluate the identity of the CGSA. Through several intensive meetings, the executive decided on a direction.
Most identity program go through many stages of creation and evaluation. This process never has a definitive end as new contexts, people, and institutions go in and out of the influence of the organization. As last years’ executive did a great job in opening the conversation to discuss the identity, it allowed us to make this next step, which is only the beginning.
