Profs That Look Like Famous People

Alright ladies and gentlemen;

We thought it would be fun to have a summer contest entitled “Profs That Look Like Famous People”. Here’s how it’s going to work – submit your suggestion (either here or to our Facebook page) and we will post them to the website as they come in. At the end of next week we’ll set up a poll and people can vote on who they think found the best resemblance (and by best we mean most hilarious/shockingly true). There will be a fun summer themed prize in it for the winner!

Happy match-making!

CGSA-AEDC Student Research Roundtable!

The CGSA-AEDC is holding its second research round-table. Last year around this time we invited communication grad students to get together and talk about the research they are currently involved in. We thought people needed a way to hear what their colleagues are up to, what challenges they are facing and questions they have, all while drinking lots of delicious free coffee. It was a great success. Which is why we are bringing …it back this year.
On Wednesday March 16th, 2011 in Desmarais (room 11143) from 9:00 to 11:00am, you are invited to come and join our research gab fest. Please note that this is not solely for students doing the research paper/thesis option. If you are in course based, and doing a research paper for a class, we urge you to join in!

We hope to see you all there!

Sincerely,
Your CGSA-AEDC

Referend…a…ums…i…things to vote on!

1.) Referenda/Elections

Electinos for the GSAED executive, as well as voting on referenda will be happening between the 21st and 24th of March, 2011. We will be voting to fill 5 positions on the GSAED Executive committee, all of which are, sadly, uncontested. That having been said, you can vote “no” for any of the candidates if you believe they are not suited to fit the job. The GSAED executive council make a lot of decisions about the day-to-day operation of our Graduate Student union. They sit on university boards and decide how the money collected by your levies will be spent. These are important positions and incompetence can be costly, so make sure to vote!

There are two other issues to be voted on, both of which are financial. The first is the referendum to demolish Café Nostalgica and re-build a new “grad house” in its place. This project is important because Café Nostalgica cannot continue to operate in the building it is currently housed in. Voting Yes will authorize collection of a $22.50 levy per semester to construct a beautiful new building.

The second referendum has to do with giving the Ontario Public Interest Research Group a $2.50 levy. Currently each student pays the equivalent of 2.50 to the OPIRG, which is financed through GSAED and SFUO budgets. A yes vote will shift that funding to an independent levy, and out of the Student Union Budget.

2.) Hiring new professors

As you may or may not know, our department is in the process of hiring two new professors. Job interviews for these positions are being held throughout the month of March, and each of these interviews involves a public lecture to which graduate students are invited. I would encourage everyone to attend as these lectures are both interesting and important if you want to understand the future direction of this department. The tentative Schedule for the public lectures is:

Rena Bevins: Wednesday March 16. 1:15-3:15 in Simard 125

Marc Edge: Thursday, March 24. 2:45-4:45 in Simard 123

Patrick McCurdy: Tuesday March 29 1:15-2:15 in Simard 123

Chloë Salles: Wednesday March 30, 1:14-3:15 (typo?)in Simard 123

Sorry, but the lecture topics are TBA. Also, exact times and schedules have changed in the past, so make sure to keep an eye out for any alterations.

3.) CGSA Round Table on Wednesday the 16th

Next Wednesday, March 16 at 9:AM in Desmarais 11143 We will be hosting a roundtable on thesis research where we can all go and vent/get advice from peers. This has proven popular in the past and I hope you can attend. I know that Rukshana is teaching a course at this time, and some of you won’t be able to attend, but getting rooms booked has proved…harrowing.

4. Union

We sent out a reminder a little while ago that the position of Union Steward for our department was un-filled. I would encourage anyone with an interest in trade unionism to go ahead and apply for the role.

APA, Chicago, MLA. These are formal systems that alleviate the burden of format, style, and grammar decisions for academics. Surprisingly, with the increase of presentations being a requirement of both student and professional life, there is no such system when it comes to visual communication. The results of this are in every classroom, every seminar, and at every conference: Fonts that are too small to be read at a distance, colour combinations that strain the eyes, powerpoint slides that make unfortunate “whooshing” noises.

Graphic designer and academic, Steve Jankowski, is holding a seminar on February 2nd, 2011 @ 1:30pm, in the Arts Hall, room 509, to teach design principles to students and professors. He will address the principles of legibility, readability, and the behavioural effects that colour, text, and image have on audiences.

As part of educating academics in the realm of design, the CGSA will be selling an amazing little book, The Cognitive Style of Powerpoint, by Edward Tufte, an artist, professor, author, and information designer. It will be sold for $10 and all sales will go to the CGSA.

Steve Jankowski received his Bachelor of Design from York University and Sheridan College in 2005. He has worked for six years in the field creating books, websites, signage, and brands for such clients as Canada Excellence Research Chairs, SSHRC, Billings Bridge Shopping Mall, and Camp Fortune. First Meet-Up of 2011

It’s a new year which means it’s time to switch it up! This semester we are going to be holding our weekly meet-up’s on Wednesday’s instead of Tuesday’s and they will be at the Standard instead of the Mayflower. There are $12 pitchers of Keiths and $14 pizza and beer specials every Wednesday – so good times are sure to be had! Hopefully the change of time and location will allow some new faces to come out and participate.

Place: The Standard Tavern (360 Elgin St.)
Time: 8:00pm
Date: Wednesday, January 12th, 2010

Sincerely,

Your CGSA
